China's shooters and the judokas of Japan won the first four gold medals of the Athens Olympics yesterday as American swimming phenomenon Michael Phelps collected the first of at least seven golds he is aiming for.
The 19-year-old took the first step to equalling the magnificent seven won by Mark Spitz at the 1972 Munich Olympics when he set a new world record to win the 400 metres individual medley.
Ian Thorpe then narrowly won the 400m freestyle final from fellow Australian Grant Hackett.
Meanwhile, Greek sprinters Kostadinos Kenteris and Ekaterini Thanou were temporarily thrown out of Greece's team for the Games after a drugs controversy.
Reigning 200 metres champion Kenteris and training partner Thanou failed to turn up for a doping test on the eve of the Games.
The International Olympic Committee is expected to rubber-stamp the decision of the Greek Olympic Committee (HOC) after it hears the athletes' version of events tomorrow.
"The executive committee of the HOC ... decided by a majority to exclude the two athletes and their coach from the Olympic team until the responsible IOC organ decides," HOC president Lambis Nikolaou told reporters after a four-hour meeting.
